Embracing a Globalizing World with MVL – 5. World Within: MVLERs in Cambodia

25 Oct 2019

Today, we are going to share a new series, “World within: MVLERs in Cambodia”.

What do the local MVL team members and TADA drivers think about TADA?

What do they think of TADA's vision and the current situation?

Let us share an honest discussion with them.

Check out the information below!

1. How do TADA Drivers in Phnom Penh work?

The higher the job satisfaction of the driver who drives the vehicle, the more friendly service the riders can be served.
For this reason, drivers are also valuable partners and customers, and their job satisfaction is a measure of the quality of service.
In order to get an honest opinion of the driver's TADA, we conducted an interview in person.

Q. Hello, nice to meet you. Please introduce yourself briefly.

A: Hello! I am Keo Sarak and I am 26 years old.
I have been with TADA as a tuk-tuk driver since the service first opened.

Q. How did you hear about TADA?

A. The TADA team introduced me to the TADA app and taught me how to use it. Therefore, I naturally became interested in TADA and signed up as a driver. It has been a while since I signed up as a driver. I was unable to operate as a tuk-tuk driver in the beginning (TADA first launched a taxi service with Choice Taxi during the beta open and the tuk-tuk service was only launched two months after that). However, I have driven as a tuk-tuk driver ever since TADA launched the tuk-tuk service.

Q. Do you use other ride-hailing apps? Which ride-hailing service do you prefer?

A. I use various ride-hailing apps, and so I accept the first job that pops up on any of the apps. However, I prefer TADA jobs. The TADA app is user-friendly to drivers.

Q. Can you tell me how TADA is driver-friendly?

A. First of all, I don't have to work overtime for your company. Also, there are no fees, so I can take all my profits and pay only for fuel. This is a big advantage. It's great to keep all of my earnings.
The more TADA riders I have, the more profit I can get. Therefore, I am always online the TADA app and try to accept as many TADA orders as I can. I am not as frequently online on other ride-hailing apps such as Passapp (Cambodia's local ride-hailing app).

Q. What do the riders feel about TADA?

A. Most riders seem to like TADA. Riders who prefer cashless payments, such as Alipay, Pi Pay, and credit cards payments are satisfied with TADA because it supports a variety of payment methods. Riders are especially keen about the simple payment system.

Q. How is the traffic situation like in Cambodia? Are there any difficulties with driving a tuk-tuk?

A. In Cambodia, traffic is heavy, and often it is not smooth. As in any country, selfish drivers often create dangerous situations on the road. I can’t recall any inconveniences or difficulties while driving a tuk-tuk in Cambodia. Maybe I feel this way because it is the most common form of transportation in Cambodia.

Q. I think you only mentioned the good things about TADA :-) Did you have any issues while using the TADA app?

A. Well, it's a bit hard to withdraw cash from TADA. In particular, when riders use TADA promotions, it is difficult for the driver to withdraw the fare for the trip. It is a bit uncomfortable for drivers who need the earnings for that day to make ends meet. However, since the promo codes help attract more riders, it is not too bad.

Q. Do you have any suggestions for the TADA team?

A. If the issue of being able to withdraw our earnings from TADA within 24 hours can be improved, I do not have anything in particular that I want (laughs). It would be good to partner with a payment agency to do this.
In addition, while the drivers are trained about how to use the TADA driver app, there are still some drivers who are poor at using the TADA app. Some drivers do not even know how much the discount rate is for some of the promotions.

Q. Thank you for sharing your honest opinion. Do you have anything to add?

A. TADA in Cambodia is growing rapidly especially with the collaboration with Choice Taxi. Choice taxi is a taxi company that previously possessed a large market share in Cambodia
If you come to Cambodia, please ride on TADA! You might be able to see me if you book a tuk-tuk ride :)

2. How are the local MVL team members in Cambodia?

How did you find the driver interview?
His honest opinion was greatly appreciated.
Then, what about the local MVL team members in Cambodia?
Are you curious about how the Cambodian office looks like?

The MVL office in Phnom Penh, Cambodia is now open!

The MVL TADA Cambodia office is in Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia. The MVL TADA Cambodia team uses the first and second floor of the building as an office. The office exterior are wrapped with a TADA image. You can also see the TADA slogan, “Better Rides Better Fares.”
It is a slogan that highlights the benefits of TADA as implicitly as the “Zero Commission”!

The first floor is used as a space where drivers can register for TADA and it is also used as a lounge for TADA drivers. On the second floor, you will be able to find our local team members working hard to operate and manage the TADA service.

To share more about TADA Cambodia, we carried out an interview with a local staff.
We heard about TADA’s major marketing project, the future plans and prospects during an interview with Navy Chan, a member of Cambodia's TADA marketing team.

Q. Hi Navy! Nice to meet you. Please introduce yourself.

A. My name is Navy and I am a marketing executive for TADA Cambodia. My goal in TADA is to make TADA the no.1 transportation method in Cambodia.

Q. MVL is a mobility blockchain project. Do you think people in Cambodia are familiar with blockchain?

A. I don’t think a lot of people in Cambodia know about blockchain or even understand what it is. This is because most of them didn’t learn about technology and there are not a lot of companies that utilize the blockchain protocol in Cambodia.

Q. You sure know a lot about blockchain. How did you learn about it?

A. Well, I have Google! (Laughter) Actually, after deciding to join TADA, I searched for what blockchain is. It's not an easy concept to understand. Cryptocurrency was illegal in Cambodia so that it was hard to learn about it. But to work for the MVL team, it's a concept I must know … I studied about popular coins such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, and I also studied about the principles of blockchain, like Node. When there is something I do not understand, I ask my team about it.

Q. I see. Then let's move on to an easier topic. TADA supports a lot of simple payments.
How do people in Cambodia feel about simple payment systems?

A. Statistically, Cambodian people tend to use cash more often. But there are some people who prefer cashless payment methods like Pi Pay, Alipay and credit cards. This is a matter of personal preference.

Q. What is the perception of TADA in Cambodia?

A. Before TADA came to Cambodia, there were two major players in the ride-hailing service called Grab and Passapp. So a lot of people were able to familiarize themselves with TADA easily as it was another ride-hailing service. However, riders were unsure what was different about TADA. TADA is the first zero-commission company in Cambodia, and it has a lot of user-friendly features within the app. I think it’s very important for riders to not see us as just another ride-hailing app, but a new player in the ride-hailing service in Cambodia.

Q. What campaigns are you carrying out to increase MVL's awareness?

A. First of all, we notify people about MVL points and promote the company itself. That's why we are promoting PR through various digital media such as news and social channels. In addition, we are constantly uploading training videos. The biggest thing we do is social media campaign.

Q. I heard there was recently a big issue in the Cambodian ride-hailing market. Can you share more this?

A. Sure. Last month, a huge protest was carried out by numerous tuk-tuk drivers. The reason for this protest was due to Grab lowering their prices to an unacceptable rate while charging the same commission. So the drivers had to experience a cut in their earnings. That is why they started to protest. The same is true for Passapp drivers. Everybody was angry and protested. But for TADA, it did not affect us, because we are a zero commission company. So, that is when a lot of drivers became more eager to join TADA. Most drivers say we are the best ride-hailing company that treat drivers fairly. We are really grateful for that.

Q. What do you think are the strengths of TADA compared to other ride-hailing apps?

A. First, TADA already won the hearts of drivers in Cambodia, because of zero commission and friendly services. In the past, drivers were treated badly with other companies. So when we offered them zero commission and a friendly service, they did not really trust us at first. But now when they know that we are a good partner for them, they started to love us and continued to support TADA by introducing TADA to their friends as well as riders who do not know about TADA yet.
We also offer our drivers flexible hours which means that drivers will not be penalized for not accepting an order. As for the riders, we offer them many cashless methods like Pi Pay, Alipay credit card as well as promo codes that provide a discount for their ride. I can say that the strength of TADA is that we are able to keep a balance between the drivers and riders to keep them both happy.

Q. What is the most important marketing strategy in MVL TADA Cambodia these days?

A. These days, we have two main strategies, content and promo codes. Firstly, for content, we are working on introducing our service to more drivers and riders. We are currently creating weekly videos that portray our happy drivers and riders. As I mentioned earlier we want to differentiate ourselves from other ride-hailing services.
Secondly, promo codes are used to incentivize more riders to use our app. Once the rider tries to book a ride using our app, they realize that the app has various easy-to-use features that include the app meter and N/A destination which Cambodian people are fond of. Our promo codes help encourage riders to first try TADA and continue to use our service once they realize how user-friendly it is. These are the two main strategies we are focusing on this month.

Q. I wish you the best of luck! Do you have anything to add?

A. Cambodia is a developing country and I think it is a country with endless possibilities. TADA is also a great app, so I think they are a bit similar. We will work together to make it the number one ride-hailing app in Cambodia. Please support us in Korea!

Thanks to Navy for her honest answers.
